What Victor Hugo can tell us about Melbourne's Streets in 2021.
"The war of the part against the whole is a form of mutiny."
Victor Hugo
Let us be in no doubt - what is currently unfolding on the Steps of Parliament is mutiny. It is an attempted coup by a very small part of the population, against the laws of both democracy and common sense. It is a war of the Part against the Whole.
It does not have right on its side. And it discarded truth as soon as it was convenient.
All the movement has is fear and hate.
You cannot build anything off this platform. The rebellion is therefore wholly regressive, and those who are participating in it, and who are stoking its fires, are participating in a war against the people of this state. This rebellion cannot go forward, it cannot progress anything because it does not believe in progress.
"There are insane outbursts of rage just as there are flawed bells; not all tocsins sound the true note. The clash of passion and ignorance is different from the shock of progress. Rise up by all means, but do so in order to grow. Show me which way you are going; true insurrection can only go forward. All other uprisings are evil. Every violent step backwards is mutiny, and to retreat is to do injury to the human cause. Insurrection is the furious assertion of truth, and the sparks struck by its flung paving stones are righteous sparks. But the stones flung in mutiny stir up nothing but mud."
Victor Hugo
The only call the people on the steps have is to go back to how it was in March 2020. Not only is this madness with the current health situation, it is also by its very nature regressive. And any attempted insurrection that is not progressive is by its very nature, evil.
The streets are currently witnessing insane outbursts of rage, born out of pure (and wilful) ignorance. And this ignorance is being stirred by those professing to be ‘Citizen Journalists’. In order to be popular and accepted, they are merely telling their followers what they want to hear. They are poisoning the debate to increase their own influence. By doing so they are injuring the cause of humanity. And are simply flinging mud all over this once proud city.
They know what they are doing. And their actions must be highlighted and called out. The people following these liars, for that is all they are, must be allowed to see that there is more than one side to an argument. And once they begin to think again and, importantly, question what they are being told, then their insane rage will die and their humanity will return just as a garden bed, once free of weeds, thrives.
There is the street riot and the national insurrection: two expressions of anger, the one wrong the other right…"
Victor Hugo
The People of Melbourne will soon reclaim the streets from these mutineers, But we can never forget how close they have come. We, who believe in progress, must keep a watchful eye out as those who believe only in Hate will try again and again to spread their evil to anyone they see as vulnerable.
